Sports Cards Vintage Price Guide
Kobe Bryant's 1996-97 rookie class is one of the deepest in basketball card history — over 30 official rookie cards across more than a dozen brands. For most collectors, the conversation comes down to two: the Topps Chrome #138 (with refractor parallel) and the Upper Deck issues. Here's a clean comparison.
All values below are from Card Ladder and reflect the most recent recorded sale + current market value as of late May 2026.
1996-97 Topps Chrome #138
The "default" Kobe rookie for modern collectors. Chrome stock, sharp design, and a refractor parallel that's become a major chase card.
Base Chrome — 2026 values
- PSA 10: last sold $9,000 (May 24, 2026). Current market: $9,000.
- PSA 9: last sold $2,400 (May 26, 2026). Current market: $2,400.
- Raw: Card Ladder doesn't track a Raw page for the Chrome version. The non-Chrome 1996 Topps #138 Raw last sold $78 (May 26, 2026) for reference.
Chrome Refractor — 2026 values
- PSA 10: last sold $97,600 (Nov 1, 2025). No recent comp — Card Ladder doesn't show a current market estimate.
- PSA 9: last sold $35,000 (May 3, 2026). Current market: $35,000.
- PSA 8: last sold $12,801 (Aug 12, 2025).
Refractors have a glossy rainbow shimmer when angled to light — and they print-line easily, which is why PSA 10 examples are scarce.
1996-97 Upper Deck #58
Cleaner photo, white border, classic Upper Deck quality. Much more available than Chrome refractor, which keeps prices lower but eye appeal high.
- PSA 10: last sold $700 (May 22, 2026). Current market: $700.
- PSA 9: last sold $105 (May 26, 2026). Current market: $105.
- Raw: last sold $26 (May 26, 2026). Current market: $26.
1996-97 Fleer #203 (the affordable rookie)
If Upper Deck and Chrome are out of budget, the 1996-97 Fleer #203 is the next stop. Massively printed, easy to find in clean condition.
- PSA 10: last sold $1,037 (May 24, 2026). Current market: $1,037.
- PSA 9: last sold $113 (May 24, 2026). Current market: $113.
1996-97 SkyBox Premium #203
Same card number, different set — don't confuse them. SkyBox Premium is its own product and trades very close to Fleer.
- PSA 10: last sold $1,100 (May 19, 2026). Current market: $1,100.
- PSA 9: last sold $130 (May 24, 2026). Current market: $130.
Which one should you buy?
If your budget is under $200
Grab a PSA 9 Upper Deck #58 (~$105) or PSA 9 Fleer #203 (~$113). Real, recognizable Kobe rookies, both will appreciate slowly.
If your budget is $1,000–$2,500
Aim for a PSA 10 Fleer #203 or SkyBox Premium #203, or a PSA 9 Topps Chrome base. Step up from there into Chrome PSA 10 if budget allows.
If your budget is $10,000+
You want a Chrome Refractor PSA 8 or higher. This is the "blue chip" Kobe card. Demand is global; supply in high grade is shrinking — the last PSA 8 sold for $12.8K and PSA 9s are clearing $35K.
Authentication tips
- Chrome refractors must show the rainbow shimmer — if there's no shift in light, it's not a refractor.
- Beware "Chrome" base cards being sold as refractors. The refractor is parallel, not base, and is far rarer.
- Buy graded above $1,000. Period.
